Stephen:

Gald to see you are writing again. Your style makes the topic seem even more interesting. I am certain taht the book will be a best seller and most likely make up for your investment in the trip (I mean expedition) several times over.

US Dept of Commerce stat conflates more than just business travelers, its also Permanent Residents visiting family - they are not "US adults w/ passports" traveling for leisure.

Although its not clear, I'm fairly certain "Total Number of U.S. Travelers" is TRIPS not individuals. How would you breakout the Green Card Holders and new citizens making 2 trips a year, or travelling with their children? Assume 20% of Leisure FVR is not "regular Americans."

What you're left with is about 5.5% of US adults traveling abroad in the years you're considering.

That may be a ridiculously optimistic %age, now.

Although dated, you should realize how far off your numbers/percentages probably are:

1) Total passport issuance includes 2 yr diplomatic & official passports, which are second passports for those Americans. You havent excluded those (3 million?)

2) Another category are work-related passports - DC has 1 million valid passports? Those (and a significant percentage of Maryland, Virginia) are govt workers/contractors, not all leisure travelers. Also, the Mariana Is. U.S.V.I. and other territories that are probably getting passports for ID. Exclude perhaps 6 million 'valid' passports!

3) Passports are issued to children, not only adults. Don't imagine 'only adults' have passports, that's nonsensical. If one-in-seven has a pp, that's nearly 5 million.

The percentage of regular Americans with passports is closer to 16%.

Stephen:

Maybe they'll be able to figure out your fuel scheme by checking the number of stamps on your passport.

Check your bank account nos. when you have a chance

Hi Steve and Steve B, you guys are doing a great job and i love the pictures.
I first find out about your trip when i was doing some research about traveling around africa. Reading your journals helped convince me when i was wavering about my decision to travel around Africa.

Now my sister and i are on a road trip around Africa, we've visited 8 countries in 3 and half months. It's been crazy but fantastic.
You can check out our website www.celebrateafrica.net
Take care and keep up the good work.
